How to get a job at the UN or Red Cross?

March 12010

Does anyone know how to get a job in those organizations? Like Red Cross or UN’s world food programs? What do you need to get in? Does it matter what degree you finished in university? Let’s say, you finished business or architecture or whatever… Will you still be able to apply/work for the UN or Red Cross? Thanks a million!

If you have a degree – or any alternative qualification – then you’ll already be in front of of the masses when it comes to hunting for professions. My pal has a degree and he wasn’t certain what direction to go with it, but he discovered some great guidance on the site in the resource box below which aided him to decide that he wanted to be a lab assistant. There is plenty of assistance on the site regarding alternative professions.

Your degrees matter. So does your experience. You’ll work your way up through that or other organizations until you develop significant expertise and worldwide background. What do you want to do with world food programs? Help advise farmers on increasing yields? Find ways to get water for crops? Agriculture degrees can be useful, as well as farming experience. Distribution? Business degrees, organizational management, logistics – lots of possibilities depending on your focus.

With Red Cross, start as a volunteer.

I’m not sure about the UN, but if you go to the your local Red Cross website they usually have a link to their careers page. Or you can check out this link for other opportunities.

An MPA, MPH, or other graduate degree (like biology, botany, or chemistry) will be a big help, depending on whether you want to do policy or actual food development. Also, being completely fluent (speaking/reading/writing/understanding) at _least_ one other language is critical for work at the UN, and is a monster plus at the Red Cross. Think Mandarin, Arabic, French, or one or more indigenous African languages (Xhosa, Swahili).
