Our 1 in 8 campaign began in November 2008, and is running on television, radio, in print and online. Based on statistics from the United States Department of Agriculture, we know that one in eight Americans struggles with hunger each year. Through Feeding America and our nationwide network of more than 200 food banks, everyone can help the people in their life who are in need.

Acclaimed director Tony Kaye filmed the television components, which are set to the song Never Let Go by Tom Waits. The PSAs mark the first time Waits has authorized his music to be used by a nonprofit organization or corporation in a commercial application. We would like to thank Mr. Kaye and Mr. Waits for their tremendous contributions to help raise awareness of hunger in America.

—–

Transforming the System: An Interview with Michelle Rhee with Eli Broad. – Aspen Institute

Michelle Rhee is chancellor of DC Public Schools, a district with 50,000 students and 144 schools. She is also the founder of The New Teacher Project, a nationally recognized leader in developing innovative solutions to the challenges of hiring new teachers.

As president and CEO of TNTP, Rhee partnered with school districts, state education agencies, nonprofit organizations, and unions to transform the way difficult-to-staff schools recruit, select, and train highly qualified teachers.

Her work resulted in widespread reform in Atlanta, Baltimore, Chicago, Miami, New York, Oakland, and Philadelphia. Rhee’s commitment to excellence in education began in a Baltimore classroom as a Teach-for-America teacher. Rhee currently serves on the advisory boards for the National Council on Teacher Quality, the National Center for Alternative Certification, and Project REACH of the University of Phoenix’s School of Education.

Very helpful. It certainly has been for me. Any of those service organizations will give you a chance to meet some of the movers and shakers of your community. And while just belonging to the organizations and maybe attending a meeting or two won’t bring a lot of business to you, what it will do is give some of the influential people of the community an opportunity to get to know you and to realize that you have certain abilities. So that when they need something that your business provides they automatically think of you. And it is just a very good way to get very active in your community and for people to get to know you.
