JKA – Japan Karate Association – 日本空手協会

February 32010

The JKA is the most authoritative and by far the largest karate organization in the world, the Keeper of Karate’s Highest Tradition.

No other organizations approaches karate with greater intensity of purpose, or maintains such a large and dedicated professional staff of highly-trained, highly paid full-time instructors.

At the JKA, karate is not merely a sport, it’s a martial art whose aim is the harmonizing of mind and body for balance, strengh, perseverance, patience – for total confidence and self-mastery.

    @seantubular …
    @seantubular Machida Karate has split from JKA. The family has their own dojo, teaching both Shotokan and BJJ. The father still has a placard in the JKA hall, though. Its funny. You could check JKA website for a list of Shihans in Brazil.

    I agree. the karate we practice today is not what it was intended to be. In Master Funakoshi’s book, he said that he is not happy with the way HIS karate was evolved by the JKA.

    @ShotokanKarateMan1Shuri-Te does not mean Chinese hand. It means Hand from Shuri, a district in Okinawa. The other two Okinawa “te” styles were Naha-Te and Tomari-Te. Shuri-Te was the precursor to Shorin-Ryu, the style Funakoshi specialized in, though he also studied some kata from Naha-Te and Tomari-Te. According to Funakoshi in his book, “Karate-Do My Way of Life”, and “Karate-Do Kyohan”, Karate in Okinawa was originally known as “Tou-Di” or Chinese hand, paying homage to its origins in China.

    I’m dying to know how JKA leadership feels about Lyoto Machida competing in MMA? Is anyone here familiar enough with JKA, Japan, to answer that question?

    ASAL48209, I know my Shotokan and I know my MMA (though I’m not very good at either :) , I can assure you, the competitors you see are as dangerous as any strikers in the world. They are par excellence. So long as they were well rounded, they would do very well in MMA. The proof is Lyoto Machida. Lyoto is JKA through and through.
