What charitable organization can I donate dishes and coffee cups etc?

March 52010

I am in the process of moving. Since my mother passed away this October, she and my late dad collected A LOT of stuff. One of which is dishes/plates, tons of coffee cups, drinking glasses etc. Is there any charitable organization that will accept donations of this kind?

Yes, there is Operation Homefront which matches your donations to military families in need. They will even come and pick them up from you and give you a donation slip for tax purposes. It is wonderful to help out these families who often have so little.

Salvation army will take them so Will Good will they would be in your phone book, and they sell them then use the money to help others. So it would give more than once and your Mother would probably like that.

See if any local homeless shelters could use them. Ditto a battered womens’ shelter. Ditto a senior citizen’s center. Our church has an annual "garage sale" and often gets donations of kitchen things from members who during the previous year handled a relative’s estate — the church cleans, organizes, prices, sells the goodies and keeps the money, the donor gets a nice tax deduction, and the buyer, often a recent graduate setting up a first apartment, gets some really nice things! While I am a fan of Goodwill and Salvation Army, I personally like to keep things local rather than shipped out to god-knows-where and sold for a pittance to somebody who turns around and puts them in a garage sale for personal profit.

Check with any local churches or other organizations that have rummage sales. We have a huge sale every year and the guy who runs it takes donations of items from anyone. Our humane society also has a couple of rummage sales each year and they take donations of anything except clothing.

Shelters also, especially ones for battered women and children because they may need help getting set up in a new home.
