Do nonprofit organizations HAVE to have specific goals?

October 222009

Instead of a nonprofit organization just to help DIABETIC children, could I start a nonprofit organization to support underprivileged children in many ways? (education, food, clothes)

I managed a non-profit wildlife center. Among a great deal of paperwork we drew up a "mission statement", but I do not recall who in specific required it for which particular permits, etc. I would think you could google "starting a non-profit org. legal requirements" or a variation on that theme and hit on some good ideas.

I believe you have to have a license or at least a permit from the city but you can start almost any kind of organization you want, I do alot of donating to habitat for humanity through work but they pay a fee each year, well worth it
