What are some good professional organizations to join?

June 212010

I’m looking for something to put on my resume. What would you recommend?

Well – depends on your professional field.

If you are just looking at things in a very general way, you can look at organizations like the Jaycees. They are good for social networking, personal development, and even can help you with resume writing and interviewing practice. Just remember, with things like that, you get out of them what you put into them.

Best of luck!

are misdemeanors reported to professional organizations on background checks?

June 182010

Board of Nurse Examiners for the state of Texas renews my professional RN License every 4 years. They are asking me to declare if I have been involved in any number of criminal offenses. I did probation for a misdemeanor, type C, and did 20 hours of public service. I was arrested at Lackland AFB, Texas for shoplifting. I never saw a judge, but accepted the deferred adjudication instead.

any arrest or conviction is a matter of public record, there are many private companies that routinely gather any and all information regarding anyone that was arrested and or convicted, so the the answer is yes

Region 1 NAD vlog #3 – PSAD on SSSD

June 132010

Julie Bourne & Sean Gerlis, Region 1 Board Representatives of National Association of the Deaf (NAD).

NAD is very saddened to learn that the Governor in the state of Pennsylvania is in the process of making major decisions regarding Scranton State School of the Deaf for the upcoming budget year with minimal input from the deaf community.

PSAD has been working through this process. Numerous other Pennsylvanian deaf organizations and groups within Pennsylvania have been doing the same. We applaud their efforts!

This issue is very important to NAD. Please check NAD President Bobbie Beths vlog as she discusses how NAD views the budget threats to schools for the deaf at http://blogs.nad.org/president.

To PSAD: once you reach a decision of how to approach this issue, it will be time to build a coalition of deaf and professional organizations throughout state of PA to address this unfortunate situation.

With a unified purpose and plan, deaf people in Pennsylvania can achieve great things. PSAD is the ideal organization to take the lead on this. It’s very important for each organization and each deaf individual in state of PA to establish a common goal and form a coalition to preserve, protect, and promote the human, civil, and linguistic rights for deaf children in PA.

If PSAD leadership requires ideas or information to navigate through this challenging time, please contact Julie and me. We will continue to monitor this closely.

We are here for you!

Should these be the responsibility of governmental, professional, or voluntary organizations?

June 72010

the U.S. has no structure in place to resolve such issues. Who should be responsible for protecting the public from unethical, ineffective, or unduly hazardous procedures and how should it be done? Should these be the responsibility of governmental, professional, or voluntary organizations? Can effective oversight activities be accomplished without destroying confidence in the health professions and institutions?

Are you talking about health care people doing hazardous, unethical things? You really need to be more specific.

But the US, well the states have laws regarding the behavior of medical professionals and if they are doing unethical and hazardous procedures, report them to the state licensing agency. There is already oversight in place. In addition to the state licensing agencies, hospitals have their own ethics and research committees.
