What charitable organization can I donate dishes and coffee cups etc?

March 52010

I am in the process of moving. Since my mother passed away this October, she and my late dad collected A LOT of stuff. One of which is dishes/plates, tons of coffee cups, drinking glasses etc. Is there any charitable organization that will accept donations of this kind?

Yes, there is Operation Homefront which matches your donations to military families in need. They will even come and pick them up from you and give you a donation slip for tax purposes. It is wonderful to help out these families who often have so little.

What are good teen voleentering organization in Houston Tx?

March 12010

I’ve been wanting to volunteer for quiet some time now, but it’s hard trying to find a cause worth volunteering for. Plus finding organizations is pretty confusing. So what do you guys think? Are you in an organization? What do you recommend? Thanks!
Oh. um one more thing if the orginazation you guys are recommending have a website can you send me the link i’d really appreciate it .. THANKS AGAIN!

Habitat for Humanity is an awesome program, most social funding is limited because they only help 1 family at a time,
They rely on volunteers and will always ask you to do more, the downfall is if your not 18, you cant help build, but there is so many ways to help, fund raising, public awareness, etc.
to see the family’s face, and tears, it makes it all worth it!!!!!

If an organization is selling chocolate bars by putting them in restaurants, what is the percent of profit?

February 272010

An organization I am quite familiar with is selling chocolate bars as a fundraiser. The executive director of the non-profit organization has been trying to find out how much of the profit on chocolate bars her organization was given, but the companies who sold the chocolate bars aren’t telling, so she’s a bit worried.

I was just wondering if there’s a typical percent given to the organization?

There is no typical percent – it depend son the company you chose to do business with. Are you sure the information is not disclosed on the website? At the very least, there should be a signed agreement between your organization and the company, so take another look at that – it should state the percentage of sales, when they are paid out, and how long the contract is for. If you can’t find the information and they refuse to tell you, you should cancel the agreement, and find a more reputable company.

I work for a tightly knit university organization. How can I start an alumni association? What should it do?

February 252010

This university organization has extremely committed students, and connection with alumni would be easy. With just a directory, how do I start an alumni organization from scratch? What would be the benefits of an organization, other than the opportunity to network for career reasons?

The benefits of an alumni network can be for career, but they can be social as well. Also, if the group was close, they might have a common interest in improving their old college or helping the students who are in the college group now.

I would start by mailing out a survey to the people from the directory to gauge how interested people would be in an alumni group. Some thing to ask include:

1) Would you be inerested in attending social events? How often (once a week/once a month/etc). What types of social events would you like to attend (movies/classes/volunteer or service events/ wine and cheese parties)

2) Would you be interested in paying yearly dues to belong to an alumni organization to off-set operating costs and event planning? If so, how much? Give a range like $10 and under, $10-20, $20-30, etc.

3) Would you be interesting in volunteering to host or plan events? Would you be interested in volunteering for the alumni organization? How much time are you willing to give? Weekly? Monthly?

Once you have the results of the survey, you might have a better idea of what people are interested in doing and how much time/money they’re willing to commit. I’ve very active in 2 alumni organizations–feel free to email me. My email address is in my profile.

i want to join a nonprofit volunteer organization, where do i start?

February 232010

I have decided just recently that my life (forgive the dramatics here please) completely lacks meaning and is without any apparent usefulness. In an effort to change that, to make me feel better about myself and, to serve a purpose to others I have decided to join an international volunteer organization. However upon searching the internet I have found that most of these organizations require a large payment before you join, some require a college degree, and I am over the age limit for some (I am twenty-five)
I have no college degree, so that rules out the peace corps, I am over age for many other organizations. The biggest problem is I am below poverty level myself so i can not afford the cost of joining many others.
I need to know what options are open for me. I want something long term (a year or more) that supplies lodging and food, I assume this would be some sort of government operation but am not sure. I see this as a life changing oppurtunity. But how do I join?
First I’ll let you know the military is not an option, tried that, have a bad left eye. I’d like to leave the country, have nothing against my own country but would like to broaden my horizons and see the world.

Peace Corps does not require a college degree — what it requires is that you have a skill you can use in volunteering. What have you done with your life so far? Do you know anything about health? Anything about agriculture, carpentry, or another skill with your hands?

There are also NGO’s (Non-Governmental Organizations) in many countries, which can give you a long-term or even a permanent position.

Another organization is the Volunteer Services Organization, or VSO. This is an international organization much like Peace Corps, which also uses people for their teaching or manual labor skills.

Don’t give up hope before looking into things! You have Americorps, Peace Corps, VSO, Red Cross, Habitat for Humanity, Caretakers of the Environment, and NGO’s. Most of these will give a (small) food allowance for your help.

What is the best organization to give money to fight extreme poverty in the world?

February 212010

One of the Millennium Development Goals has to do with eradicating extreme poverty in the world by the year 2015. A lot of organizations spend their money for overhead — what is the best organization to bread directly into the hands of starving people?

I think in your own community. Food banks and Christmas toys for the underprivileged kids. Stuff like that!

Situating Personal Information Management Practices within an Organization

February 192010

Google Tech Talk
December 4, 2009

ABSTRACT

Presented by Manuel Pérez-Quiñones.

Personal Information Management (PIM) practices are the behaviors that we follow when we organize our information. This often includes emails, documents, bookmarks, pictures, etc. Research in PIM has identified a common set of activities that require support: encountering information, organizing information, filing/archiving, and reusing information. Different tools must provide different kinds of support for each one of these activities.

PIM practices become easier if the organization provides some infrastructure to alleviate the difficulty of these activities. But a larger value is that the organization can leverage these personal practices to improve the effectiveness of others and to capture that elusive corporate knowledge in an easy way.

In this talk, I will describe previous work in PIM and highlight how some of the PIM practices can be supported and leveraged from the organization point of view.

Manuel A. Pérez-Quiñones is Associate Dean and Director of the Office for Graduate Recruiting and Diversity Initiatives at the Graduate School, Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science, and a member of the Center for Human-Computer Interaction at Virginia Tech. Pérez-Quiñones holds a DSc in Computer Science from The George Washington University. His research interests include human-computer interaction, personal information management, user interface software, digital government, and educational uses of computers. He is a member of the Coalition to Diversify Computing, where he co-directs the national program Collaborative Research Experience for Undergraduates in Computer Science and Engineering. He serves on the editorial board for ACM’s Transactions on Computing Education journal. For 2008-2010 has been included in the IEEE Computer Society Distinguished Visitor program.

How do I set up an Philanthropic organization (group or club) at my school?

February 192010

I want to set up an organization at my school, preferably a group of girls called G.L.A.M. that gives to organizations and etc. Has anyone set up an organization like this or similar?

First consult with your President or Principal of the school and tell them what you want to do and they will tell you if you can. If that all goes well take it from there.
