Congressman Cohen Floor Statement on Need to Reform Credit Card Fees for Charitable Donations

In an effort to maximize charitable donations made through credit cards, Congressman Steve Cohen announced that he will be introducing the Complete Charitable Contribution Act of 2010.

Congressman Cohens legislation would limit the amount credit card companies could charge for administrative costs associated with processing charitable donation transactions, as opposed to the existing interchange rate which can be as high as five percent per donation. This would ensure that more of the money that Americans donate to charitable organizations reaches the intended organization.

Topics of discussion include the importance of drafting a will for all individuals, regardless of level of wealth, the potential consequences from not producing a will, and why this document should include a charitable planned giving component. The impact of even small charitable bequests on local organizations is discussed, as why proper estate planning can allow an individual to take care of loved ones while also making a significant difference for charitable organizations. Also mentioned is the importance of formally designating beneficiaries of 401k plans, retirement plans, insurance plans and other assets.

The campaign resulted from a growing concern for non-profit organizations, who because of increasingly less government funding, are fighting to exist. And the problem worsens because this forces non-profit groups to rely more on public support; however, although 81.5% of people in Southeast Michigan give annually, only 2.8% leave a charitable bequest at death. LEAVE A LEGACY is addressing this problem by educating people about the importance of planned gifts for the charities we depend on and support.

People of the atheist religion, why does your religion not have charitable organizations like other religions?

do? For example, Christianity has many thousands of charitable organizations to feed the poor, house the homless, ect.

The atheist faith in a godless universe does not impose any sort of obligations. Most atheists think people evolved from a chemical pool and have no obligation other than survival.

Christians, on the other hand, recognize that we will be judged in part on how we respond to the exigencies of the "least of our brothers" (Matt 25). That motivates us to serve God by feeding the hungry, giving drink to those who thirst, clothing the naked, healing the sick, and visiting those unjustly imprisoned.

Kolhapur Medical Mega Camp 2010 held by SHREE ANIRUDDHA UPASANA FOUNDATION (KHAR, MUMBAI) along with its sister organizations such as SADGURU SHREE ANIRUDDHA UPASANA TRUST, DILASA MEDICAL TRUST & REHABILITATION CENTRE, ANIRUDDHA AADESH PATHAK, ANIRUDDHA’S HOUSE OF FRIENDS AND ANIRUDDHA’S ACADEMY OF DISASTER MANAGEMENT, held on 14th & 15th Feb. 2010 at Shahuwadi Taluka, Pendakhale Village of Kolhapur. Shree Aniruddha Upasana Foundation (SAUF) is a charitable organization incorporated under Section 25 of the Companies Act, 1956. Shree Aniruddha Upasana Foundation (SAUF) along with Dilasa Medical Trust & Rehabilitation Centre (DMTRC) and other affiliated organizations, including Aniruddha’s Academy of Disaster Management (AADM) all of which are registered charitable organizations, undertake various socio-cultural activities, one of witch is the Kolhapur Medical and Health Camp. For the past six years, unique mega medical camp is being conducted in a backward area of Kolhapur District, covering nearly 200 village. This is the seventh year of this camp. The medical team comprises of physician Ophthalmologists, Dentists, Pediatricians, Gynecologists, ENT surgeons, Cardiologists, Orthopedists and General Practitioners.Although the Camp is held For 1 day, the planning Commences months in advance. Post the camp, regular follow up activity is maintained, leading right up to the time to planning for the next camp. Data of every remote village and villagers covered by the camp is maintained by volunteers to meet the exact requirements of the villagers. During the recently conclude 2008 mega medical camp, about 16,300 villagers from 281 villages including 8,858 students from 119 school & overall above 22,000 needy people have been benefited from this camp.
