Medivac – Is there any help available from organizations to move an injured American from Italy to US?

December 12009

My relative was injured while touring Rome, Italy. She is still in a coma. We are looking into Medivac to bring her home when ready. Expense is terrific. Are there any organization that might help? Family is already planning fundraisers. Thank You.

Your travel insurance should cover this, if she has it. Transferring a patient from one nation to another is extremely expensive. Some companies charge over £50,000 (US$100,000) to medivac someone from the US to Europe.

One thing to remember, it will not only be the cost of the repatriation, but also you will have to pay the costs of her hospital stay in Italy. The hospital may not actually let her be removed from there until the bill is paid. More and more European hospitals are persuing Americans for unpaid hospital bills and getting the money.

I hope everything turns out all right.
