Now, over 50 years later, the leaders of the movement reflect on the impact. [3/2010] [Public Affairs] [Humanities] [Show ID: 18203]

School’s Out South Carolina

May 272010

School’s Out is an education-based charitable organization that tries to enhance our educational offering so that children can climb out of poverty and pursue opportunity, and present more pathways for parents and caregivers to support children along the way.

Schools Out! focuses on two goals to address our challenges in our public elementary schools: (1) that children are better prepared physically, emotionally, and mentally for the next school day, and (2) that parents and care-givers more intensely invest themselves in the well-being of the children.

Schools Out! seeks to achieve these goals through implementing and operating Community Learning Centers at Mary Ford Elementary, Stono Park Elementary, and James Simons Elementary in the Charleston, South Carolina area.

A Community Learning Center provides robust after-school academic, recreation, health, and enrichment components to the enrolled children while creating educational opportunities for the childrens parents and care-givers. A Community Learning Center embraces partnerships with people and organizations that can provide services at the school. A Schools Out! Community Learning Center reinforces the reality that, as the nucleus of every neighborhood, the public elementary schools should be where the community comes together.

140 people have been killed and more than eight-hundred injured during violence in Urumqi, the capital of northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. That’s according to Xinjiang Public Security Department, which says the death toll is likely to climb.
Local government authorities say a separatist group masterminded Sunday’s violence, aiming to sabotage the country.

Rioters took to the street of Urumqi on Sunday evening.

They began by gathering, marching and demonstrating which then culminated in violent acts.

An initial investigation shows the violence was masterminded by the separatist group — World Uyghur Congress.

The group is led by Rebiya Kadeer — a former Chinese businesswoman.

The group has recently been instigating unrest via the Internet and by other means calling on the rioters “to be braver” and “to do something big.”

The Xinjiang regional government says terrorism, separatism and extremism… are behind the violence.

The Xinjiang regional government also says instigators began spreading information on the Internet on Saturday evening, calling for a demonstration in Urumqi.

And they say, on Sunday Rebiya called on her accomplices in the country to further incite unrest.

Regional government authorities say the situation is now under control.

Regional government authorities say police have arrested several hundred participants, including more than ten key figures who fanned the unrest. Police say they are still searching for about 90 other key figures behind the unrest.

Acclaimed director Tony Kaye filmed the television components, which are set to the song Never Let Go by Tom Waits. The PSAs mark the first time Waits has authorized his music to be used by a nonprofit organization or corporation in a commercial application.
