Is ACORN (Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now) being unfairly targeted?

October 302009

Officials have raided ACORN’s headquarters, accusing ACORN, of registering false names. ACORN, which boasts of registering over 1 million voters, focuses on low-income families who mainly vote for the Democratic party. ACORN says the allegations against them are over-blown and that they are doing everything they can to ensure proper registration. Do you think they’re being unfairly targeted?

ACORN has launched a video against McCain and the GOP at a cost of $50,000. I guess this answers the question of who ACORN is in the tank for. ACORN is still under investigation is several states.

Do you know any youth organizations at which I can volunteer? ?

October 302009

I am 17 years old and I am tired of the traditional route taken by high schoolers in order to fill their community service requirements for high school/college admissions. I want to help out beyond my local community and was wondering if there were any volunteering organizations out there in which volunteers do not necessarily have to be 18, such as the Peace Corps, in order to help out abroad. Any help would be very appreciated. Thanks.

Hi there, NY Terror 42.

Odd screen name, but there is no accounting for taste. Perhaps you are a poor driver and a terror on the roads.

The Peace Corps won’t really take 18 year olds, unless they have been helping on the family farm since they were old enough to walk AND have stellar leadership records with 4H/FFA. 95% of all PCVs have a degree. The rest have 10 – 50 years of experience a host country wants.

At 17 you can go with the Student Conservation Association to spend a week or two doing maintenance in a national park. You have to pay your own way and buy your own food, but the NPS loans you a tent and you don’t need quarters for the video arcade at night, because there isn’t one. You work with a great bunch amidst spectacular surroundings. My daughter did it. I recommend it highly. Write if you need a link.

What roles have International organizations such as UN played in todays world?How will they continue in future

October 302009

Mostly ineffective. Consider that the UN today is made up of representatives from all countries, from good to evil. Do you think much progress can be made when evil is allowed a vote? From Uganda, to China, to North Korea, big or small, all it takes is a few to thwart the many. That’s why progress with UN auspices are slight, and achingly slow. NATO on the other hand can move with much quicker speed, because it’s made up of like-minded governments that want the same thing – freedom for their people, freedom to speak freely, move about freely, economic freedom. Absent from many countries, from small to large despotic regimes. As long as evil is allowed a seat at the table with good, stalemate is all you’ll get.
The UN does have some economic impact, as International laws get acknowledged by all regarding ocean territory, trade treaties, international flow of tourists, etc. So it does serve a function, but it has very little power to do much or accomplish much otherwise.
In the future, the UN will continue to mediate international laws, for Maritime and outer space matters. As far as military intervention ( Darfur, etc. ) it will be weak and mostly ineffective.

How would i go about working in the field of charitable organizations?

October 302009

What would i need to major in college if i wanted to work in a non profit or a charitable organization in general?

Are there a lot of those types of jobs out there right now? In 5-10 will I be able to find work or will it be difficult?

It depends entirely upon what you want to do for them. They perform business functions exactly like a business does, but they just don’t have the same concern about knowing or reporting the cost of doing their functions the way a profitmaking organization does.

They need to find clients;
they need to find income;
they need to keep books;
they MIGHT need to invest excess funds;
they need to know the laws governing their activities;
they need to manage both volunteer workers and low-level workers;
they MIGHT need to obtain consulting services for any of their functions;
they MIGHT need to maintain their business offices;
they MIGHT need, occasionally, to expand or obtain other offices;
they need to manage correspondence, and MIGHT need easy retrieval of those;
they need to know their cost of operations, but MIGHT obtain that with an accounting consultant;
they probably need to monitor and report the size and cost of providing the services (or products) that they do.

If they are competing with other nonprofits to provide the same services or to draw on the same money sources, then they probably need to assess whether they do these things as effectively or more effectively than others in the field. For this they may require not only auditing, but management advice and market research.

So it would seem that any education appropriate for business is good for nonprofits, with the possible exception of the fields of profit, and facing direct competition. You could add onto this, the special areas of soliciting for charity and pursuit of grant money from private and government sources.

As to securing employment, I’m pretty sure they suffer as any other part of the economy. There are no guarantees for a future job. Being prepared is the best you can do. The business education, though, should help with any professional job search.

What is the common term in English to say NGO, Non-profit, charity, Aid organizations?

October 302009

Hi, What the best well spread term, or concept, to tell about NGO, Non-profit, charity, Aid and humanitarian organizations.
Thank you a million in advance!

I have heard all of those terms used in English and I believe they are all appropriate—native speakers will know what you mean.

In American English, the ones I hear most often are "non-profit" and "charity."

How well do you think Native American organizations,like the Bureau of Indian Affairs,are helping Native Ameri

October 302009

How well do you think Native American organizations, like the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA), the National Congress of American Indians (NCAI), and the National Indian Gaming Association (NIGA), are helping Native Americans to advance? Explain your answer. If anything, what are organizations like these doing to mitigate tribal poverty, and encourage prosperity?

If this is a serious question for a report or thesis, I recommend contacting each of the organizations to get an idea of their agendas and then contact various reservations to get their take on the organizations and how they help or hinder and how they think the organizations can be improved.

I also recommend that you go to www.grandforksherald.com and contact Dorreen Yellow Bird. She is a columnist at the paper who used to work for NCAI in the late 70’s and through most of the 80’s and has been active in tribal life on the reservation. I don’t know her personally but I went to college with her son and this is how I am aware of her.

Good Luck.

Why don’t losing organizations like the Mets do what business organizations do and learn and absorb what …?

October 302009

the winning organizations and businesses are doing. The Mets need to take notes and study the Yankees, Dodgers, Red Sox, Giants, Astros, Rockies, Cardinals. I forgot. The other New York team thinks they are in 2000 and Piazza, Leiter and Valentine are still your idols. Stop living in the past and learn from winners!
bags-thanks for using the two words I like the most, common sense.

Egos often take the place of common sense.

What organization, if any, gives away cheap or free used cars to low income people who need them?

October 302009

I am unemployed and have been seeking work; however have been unable to find work, and had to drop out of college. I finally found a job, but can’t get to work. Does anyone know of a church or organization in general who gives away or sells cheap cars for the needy/poor? Or sells cars to the disabled? Thank you for your help.

Your best option is post an ad on craigslist and explain your situation and ask for a little local support I have seen a few and I have actually sent canned food and diapers to one woman. When children are innvolved it takes a village to raise a child. I have included a decent one I seen on craigslist recently. It’s worth a shot.
